The New Jewish Center in Prague 2 was opened to meet the needs of the city of Prague, known as the Jerusalem of the Diaspora. Before World War II, most of Prague’s Jewish community lived in Prague 2, and the largest synagogue in Europe stood at its center. In 1945, the synagogue was mistakenly bombed by the United States, and the communist regime that followed ensured its complete destruction. We took on the mission and decided to restore its former glory. For the first time in 80 years, we opened a community center with an active synagogue (according to the Chabad–Ari Z”L tradition) in the same neighborhood—where even today, most of Prague’s Israeli residents and Jewish medical students live. The center also features a unique holy library, the only one of its kind in Prague, offering opportunities to study Kabbalah, the Talmud, Jewish law, and more. Every Friday and Saturday, Shabbat meals are held in honor of the synagogue’s worshippers.Everyone is invited to join the effort to fight assimilation and help restore the spiritual beauty of Jewish Prague.
